You will get a sense of “kepengen terus melakukannya”. That’s when you know it becomes your passion. It starts however, from a little bit of interest. That interest will then grew on you. Bigger and better.

  1. Berani mengambil kesempatan.

Mulai beranikan diri one step at a time. As I always say, you gotta start from somewhere. So start.

  1. Content, Contextual, Consistency.

The 3 Cs investments that will lead to your personal branding or any type of branding purpose from nothing to something. It is a strategy that we common use when building a brand. Tinggal kita gunakan for our own preference.

  1. Be genuine.

By being yourself you will find who you truly are. Menjadikan jati ciri, signature atau pembeda menumbuhkan your own tribe. Sometimes your uniqueness or your chosen liking of something will be so different it becomes niche. But by being focus , you open to new “others” and that is where lies the opportunity. A niche market.

  1. Nourish your network.

Having the network does not mean anything if you do not do the right thing. Start invest time, space, building friendships not just acquaintance. So then, to let your network serve your purpose. Andira pernah mendapatkan nasihat dari Rene Suhardono, mengambil quote dari Susan RoAne, “Its not about who you know but who knows you” Artinya, if they really know you, they will talk about you, they will become your network of buzzer.

Palliative Care learnings with University of Philippines Diliman

Happy to share my experience with the University of Philippines Diliman (dated on 11th March 2018) on establishing Palliative Care during my time at Pita Kuning.

One day, I was contacted by someone who works for Dompet Dhuafa Republica . Apparently they had read and learn through all my series of blog post on Tyas Social Project (read : English version or Bahasa Indonesia version). Tyas Social Project is about the process on how we implement Pita Kuning new strategy service focuses on Psycho-Social activities to meet the needs of Palliative Care for children with cancer from underprivileged families. It became a reference for their acquaintance from University of Philippines about Palliative Care.

Palliative care is still very new for some so the understanding and also how to implement into an actual practice are very rare as it is a unique story to tell.

Who would’ve thought that someone whom I have completely never met could even given me as a reference of knowledge as big as Dompet Dhuafa.

It is a beautiful feeling when we could be a service for those who really needs. In this case, especially to support the prevention and the counteract measures of childhood cancer, palliative care needs and any social initiatives. In Indonesia, in the Philippines, in Asia and anywhere around the world.

I remember the last question given to me was, are there anything I would want to change now that I can see the overall results ?

I pause myself to think for a moment and said, no. There are none.

I look to see a small smile that continue with a question, aren’t there anything you would like to do better ?

Honestly, no, I said to them.

There are no perfect benchmark to what is best in practice implementing any social impact model from my point of view. Every story is unique and over the course of the journey, with all the conditions and situations we had to overcome, I believe we have done our best. I wouldn’t change anything.

On the other hand, I feel it is important to develop our own journal throughout the journey we have experienced.

Especially when our experience are unique and what we have done is new.

Understand that it is very important to never stop building our own expertise. Sharing to people not only who we know but also who we should know, building a network and digital footprints of our own.

Having to understand that one day, these writing, these stories in a form of strategic management journals would be useful to others.

Tyas Social Project – Time to let go

English Version

#TyasSocialProject #9

At last it is time for me to leave.

Since October 2015 I have given my time, professionally to work as the role of Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia Chairman. One very rare opportunity that gave me great life lesson, personally and professionally.

A learning process that I would never forget. I am truly grateful with the opportunity and those who has accept me with all my shortcoming as well as my advantages.

I always try to hold on to what I believe, as I understand that we can never forget who we are and why we are here today. My duty to make the changes needed for this foundation had been succeeded. All points of issues that needed to solve was completed. It is very important for me to share the changes that has happened. As it will become an understanding that my service is done.

Now, Pita Kuning has,

  1. Owns a a new strategy of service positioned or focuses on psycho-social services to meet the needs of palliative care with new re-define purpose, vision and mission.
  2. A new structure organisation that is divided by hired worker and skilled volunteer work programs, clear division of work, work process, work protocol/SOP , hired work contract/work commitment so the workforce dan volunteering becomes sustainable, recorded and measured.
  3. Have good relationship or re-gain relationship with stakeholders with an ongoing consistent community management.
  4. Own a calculative financial projection that separate operational cost and distribution of support for each child with a monthly target by 30-50 child, within Jakarta Tangerang Bekasi (JaTaBek).
  5. Systematic recorded data of distribution support and also the progress of each child and their family regularly updated on our website through Diary Anak Pita Kuning (the Diary of Pita Kuning children).

Essentially, Pita Kuning now has a guideline and tool work to support their work process through recorded and well trained individual member of PIta Kuning though  knowledge management.

Manajemen Pengetahuan : the process of creating, sharing, using and managing the knowledge and information of an organisation. It refers to a multidisciplinary approach to achieving organisational objectives by making the best use of knowledge. Knowledge management efforts typically focus on organisational objectives such as improved performance, competitive advantageinnovation, the sharing of lessons learned, integration and continuous improvement of the organisation.[7] These efforts overlap with organisational learning and may be distinguished from that by a greater focus on the management of knowledge as a strategic asset and on encouraging the sharing of knowledge.[2][8] KM is an enabler of organisational learning.

All learnings from the distribution support for each child, the knowledge, the experience, the background reason why can or cannot become a working protocol. To achieved the productivity and impact we wanted to achieved operationally becomes a discipline and work guide based on real experience.

The discipline. The requirements. The fundamentals. The reason behind. The price, the notion, the respect. The quality. Becomes the fundamental reason to go in, make changes, and level up. It is the true asset to whatever form of social impact model Pita Kuning wants to reach. That before, was never owned.

To me, the most important goal was to give this foundation a strong base line align with the search to be sustainable. I hope, from the knowledge management that now has been recorded, and trained for 2,5 years I have been at service becomes a strong foundation, influenced by the discipline from each individual within the organisation to move forward. To know where we are, and to have a benchmark of where we are and where we should be, is achieved.

For the continuance to seek the best social impact model will never end. As again Ramya Prajna, from ThinkWeb said, “it is not enough to just care”. ThinkWeb has been very supportive help building our digital platforms including helping and assisting the formulation and knowledge of what is Sosial Impact Model.

To me, being a leader is not only a decision but more so as a responsibility.

I will continue my duty as a professional, crafting my work, chasing dreams and aim a meaningful purpose.

Thank you so much for Pita Kuning and friends that has helped, open their doors to work together during my time at Pita Kuning.

Friends of foundations, Health Departments of the Republic of Indonesia, Hospitals, Doctors, The Experts, Communities, Donors, but most truly, my dear dearest children of Pita Kuning and family that have given their trust and faith to us.

Special thanks to Pita Kuning team,  hired paid and volunteers, I truly thank you. What we have achieved together will be your masterpiece and that is all your hard work. You make me proud everyday. I hope I have given as much learning, guidance and be a model of compassion for each and everyone of you.

I hope we could remain friends.

To the founders, councils of Pita Kuning, thank you for the opportunity. I will always be grateful for this opportunity.

Life is truly beautiful to have the opportunity to serve those in need. It was an honour, a privileged and with great pleasure to serve Pita Kuning . Thank you, I’ll see you next time.

#sayaPitaKuning ,always do good together.

Much love and warm wishes,

Tyas Handayani Wongsoyudo.

Tyas Social Project – Going Palliative

English Version

#TyasSocialProject #8

Pita Kuning going Palliative Care, focuses on Psycho-Social based activities.

After 3 months trial practices from October to December 2016, also show casing pur new service to media and donors on January 2017 we tried to review on the learnings we have up til now.

Information, knowledge, lessons, each case we found have let us fill in and also improve the structure of our service formulation.

However we have still a lot to learn, absolutely, nevertheless there are concrete cause and effect all in written. To find solutions of problems and how to handle them, what to do, why do we need protocols and operational supporting activities also division of support will lead to so many things, including the operational cost needed.

Again, knowledge management. How it is important for a single method taken from the learnings of 5 chosen child, within 3 months assisting activities and distribution fund supports. My hope, within time it will improve and progress with the same objective, to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their family.

After that 3 months learning, we then know and understand more expecially on children with cancer, nursing and care taking. Based on KPKN childhood cancer countermeasures,

we have found and finally understood that all these times what we have done through our activities are actually building efforts and how important palliative care was. The understanding back then was not yet been educated. And the comprehension of what is Palliative Care is also misunderstood.

Palliative Care is not only for cancer patient that are in later stage but needed right from the start. Palliative Care cannot be replaced by any medical treatment but as an aspect that completes each other, even needed after the patient is passed away for the family that has impacted.

Palliative Care is a series of efforts in trying to reduce the pain, trying to help accept the fact of having cancer with patient and their family, trying to help overcome the impact made by the disease in the end to improve the quality of life for the child with cancer and their family.

To improve the quality of life for children with cancer and their family as our main goal meaning, we aim for family productivity. When a member of the family is sick or could not perform normally it usually impact the the balance of the family’s daily routine. If many family are defected their ability to perform in their daily lives, hence the quality of life a community or a region as result there will be in a limp. Trying to seek the best solution comes from a bigger dream. We want to be a part of a better Indonesia.

For us finding the alignment of our main purpose and our background history as well as our need to grow was eventually taken from the 3 months trial activities. It was indeed a relief.

Of course by going palliative there will be some adjustments needed for the organisation. But wherever we are, working anywhere, there are no guarantee on what changes would might had happen, at anytime. For me, the most important as I am still at my service, is the main purpose why I am here in the first place. And therefore the main objective has not changed. Still within and align with the promise, the agreement for this organisation to have a strong platform, to become better and the have the opportunity to help more children with cancer in Indonesia.

Pandji Pragiwaksono, Founder and Council of Pita Kuning once said, “we, still have many opportunities and have the ability to be flexible in our own lives. But, the children we are helping do not. Always give space to grow within this organisation. Solely and purposely for the children.”

For Pita Kuning we still need to do so many things in order to get the ideal Palliative Care based services. Through our skills and our capacity.

We then started to joint partnership and try to affiliate with a lot of parties so that we can rise above, be strong and steady to give the best that we can do of each year’s goals.

In managing our service combine both on volunteering and hired workers, the supporting cost we need also would be an important aspect.

We also need to partner and educate the awareness those who wants to join together for the same cause, helping children with cancer. My hope that Pita Kuning could be a part of the larger ecosystem of childhood cancer countermeasures in Indonesia. and also can be able to partner with anyone who share the same mission.

Currently, I am proud that Pita Kuning has started to collaborate with other foundations that has the same understanding on the importance of palliative care.

Rachel House Indonesia and Rumah Harapan Valencia are 2 foundation that has the same mission as Pita Kuning.

Rachel House Indonesia mission is to provide palliative care for children living with life-limiting conditions, allowing them to live with joy and dignity in a non-discriminatory, safe and loving environment. Rachel House helps children in Indonesia with AIDS and Cancer from underprivileged families through medical support that was referred by doctors. It was a fortunate coincidence, that the new CEO of Rachel House, mba Kartika Kurnisari is our dear friend from Putera Sampoerna Foundation.

Hand in hand we work together to help children with cancer. Now together with Rachel House from the medical side and Pita Kuning from the psycho-social side. Starting from early assessment up til bereavement we support palliative care needs for each of our child with cancer and their family. We also have amonthly monitoring meetings to review progress and learn the needs ultimately to have a good management case system and could help each other fill in the gap in support to help those in our care, at Jabodetabek.

As with Rumah Harapan Valencia we agreed to take care together those child with cancer within the pyscho-social activities. Mba Silly invited us to continue our support to other cities in Indonesia. Pray to make that happen.

Small Note : In the social activist world, it is never impossible to work together. What we are doing is to help those in needs. Whoever is lacking will be supported by others. And of course the spirit of competition will never die. Ramya Prajna, a social impact enthusiast and educator says, competition within the social initiative world will push productivity and therefore makes the industry becomes lively and more exciting.

To manage well, we also started to learn on the true role of Social Worker. We met with an expert of Social Worker, mba Nurul Eka Hermawan . Mba Eka, as she is called, as work and a consultant for the Social Department and International institution for many years. Through her experience and guidance we started to recruit Social Worker to be our case manager for our children we have at Pita Kuning. They also become the bridge to each multidiscipline parties of Palliative Care, according to the needs of each child. They are also the coordinator of volunteers as each group of volunteers support each appointed child with cancer and their family in a group of 3-5 by weekly assisting programs.

Pita Kuning team with Mba Nurul Eka (expert on Social Worker) and mba Ita D Azly (Family Psychologist)

Currently, Pita Kuning has 3 Social Worker that are dedicated to be the coordinator to volunteers and communities. They are true millennials. Isn’t that incredible ?

I do hope, each child gets a continuance story through their case management that can be shared. To be used as a monitoring learning or a proof of concept for us every case always has a goal objective to reach both psycho-socially.

And in the end, I truly believe the impact of what we do will make a full circle of hope for the sustainability of Pita Kuning as part of the childhood cancer countermeasures ecosystem. All for the best in doing good together.

And that is why it is time for me to let go.

Tyas Social Project – The Task Force

English Version

#TyasSocialProject #7

Who are the Task Force of Pita Kuning Psycho-Sosial Formulation

Tyas Amalia Yahya

Tyas has the same name as me. Tyas had to changed her name into Lia when eventually mix-ups became issues during executions with any external parties. Hahahahah sorry bout that. Tyas is one of many volunteers that fell in love with Pita Kuning. She is so committed to help children with cancer for more than 6 years since I came in on October 2015. If today is 2018, Tyas has been with Pita Kuning for 9 whole years. An amazing time and contribution. With Pita Kuning, Tyas met with so many people and experience many things. Witness what has happen during the years, through many milestones, and keep founding herself wanting to contribute more to Pita Kuning.

A smart lady graduated from FISIP University of Indonesia, majoring in Social Welfare, is one of the people I knew way back in the days before my time as chairman for Pita Kuning. Social Welfare. those who graduated become a Social Worker. A role that is so important to the social institutions and foundations in Indonesia but so rare to be understood or lacking awareness about it.

As Lia apparently has gain many knowledge, she became very much valuable in the development of Pita Kuning moving forward and become better. her contribution through her direct experience becomes our  railway or ring fence and structure to a better management system.

Ita D Azly

My introduction in meeting mba Ita was truly a calming experience. Finding the right expert to help us build a new system that supports childhood cancer was at all not easy. At this point, I have met, chat, try to get acquainted with many psychologist. Soooooo many. With psychologist from many field of background and different experience. But it took a while for then we gain learnings that was so useful in a very short time.

Mba Ita is a family psychologist that as many experience handling difficult cases of violence and deviate. Besides that, cases that comes by the impact of disease that is difficult to cure like AIDS, Cancer and others are some within her interest.

Her contribution in building the new services for Pita Kuning cannot be taken lightly. Driven by her passion and good intention to help from the start, like our vision and mission to the formulation needed that has the right composition to fit in with the needs of childhood cancer.

Through mba Ita’s help we have learn a lot on what is psycho-social, how to asses and evaluate a case of childhood cancer and their family, how we put it all the knowledge together within the work process of what we have, a group of hired and volunteer workers.

It doesn’t stop there, her role and presence also gave a lot of values in knowledge that gave us more substance in briefing and trainings. Mba Ita is a true hero for Pita Kuning.

Noviana Eva

I have known Eva from my previously at Putera Sampoerna Foundation. I recruited her as Digital Community Officer for the division I lead Digital and Social Media, a part of Centralised Marketing & Communication. Eva is a person who is always easy going, sharp and has a positive spirit. So I asked her to join in the base of where this organisation is going. Community Partnerships as well as to support Marketing and Communication that would be beneficial for us as well.

In the beginning of Eva contributions of developing the service product formula is to seek strategic partnerships that would give benefits to our services and also the formulation of assistance activities. Eva would lead the skilled task force with the champions in social driven activities, communities and volunteering, consist of, Muhammad Fikri – Head of Community, Bukalapak, Yudha Adyaksa – Chairman of Pramuka Youth (Indonesian Youth Scout), Yosea Kurnianto – Founder Youth ESN, Hety A. Nurcahyarini – Activist in Education, Indonesia Mengajar and more. Gathering interesting insights and inputs from many peoples that were involved in building social initiatives through out Indonesia. As we understood our strength at Pita Kuning that was built upon a group of young volunteers right from the start.

Eva also composed a volunteering bible to support all the activities in Pita Kuning in objective of making volunteering sustainable within the work process.

Ning Mahayu

Ning is someone who gain knowledge from Putera Sampoerna Foundation for 6 years. Because of that she has many experience building social initiatives, programs and activities. She was a part of the team when the social initiatives of Sampoerna Academy by the education pillar, Sahabat Wanita by the Women empowerment pillar, Koperasi Siswa Bangsa or a union cooperatives of students as well as a part of PSF’s Cutural Development. I have worked at the same office but I would admit, I have never work side by side, together in a project with her. But personally, as someone show likes to observe, I have quite fond and witness her potential from a far.

To seek the head of services for Pita Kuning I immediately remember Ning. Ning has everything we need. 6 years of experience in building social programs, accustom of working by professional structure and loves the social institution world. Perfect.  her contributions were huge in building the services and also the operational aspect of Pita Kuning til now.

Among many strengths that Ning have, I feel, Ning’s core strength was having the ability to learn new things completely and in depth. She relies on the actual “institution of information” as the foundation and instrument to develop the formulation of a product services. her clarity to justify from all sides and have the heart to see makes her analysis also producing solutions for humanity. Up for any challenge , Ning has the potential to be a good leader.

Mustika Kusumaningtyas

Tika is one of the last person I’ve asked to join in this organisation. I have known her from back in the days we where in the same company at Multiply Indonesia, one of e-commerce pioneer in Indonesia during that time.

I admire her when observing her role as Lead Operational Customer Service. Smart, sharp, data driven, rigorous, and have a sense of strong management skills for both operasional and process flow. That is why I approaced Tika. Later she agreed to be vice chair for Pita Kuning.

Tika is passionate in healthcare for children. You can rely on Tika to do anything finance and operational driven. her contribution in building this formuation for Pita Kuning service is huge as she was the one who connect it all together, always accomplished to find operational matters needed to taken care of and always care to pay attention to each process and each issues.

Click on each of their names and you can learn more about them.

Go back to, the formulation story. Or,

Go to the next story, Going Palliative Care.

Tyas Social Project – the formulation

English version

#TyasSocialProject #6

How did we formulate Pita Kuning new product of service cornerstone.

Making changes needed in Pita Kuning, producing a new machine for Pita Kuning, besides the re-organisation needs we need a formula for the new product service. Product hear means Pita Kuning main service activities. The foundation for Pita Kuning ecosystem. The main purpose and why we are here today.

It is important to review the form of what is best suited hence give real benefits for our children with cancer and their parents but also if possible becomes one long lasting productivity align with the type of organisation and also our operating systems.

That is why in terms making the changes needed or building foundation, I made an analogy as we are developing a new machine.

In the early stage we would raise questions like, what is the right way to give support  our children. What is not yet available yet very much needed for children with cancer from underprivileged families.

The other question are, how can the right services give benefits to those who needs help ?

In the early assessment and recommendation which was understood both the importance and reason behind the problems including who are the stakeholders and therefore direct the trajectory of this Foundation.

As we enter an early phase we understood that we need to develop many joint cooperation. The process of getting to know and working together either way as temporary or long run has to be accepted and then could avoid an wrong expectations in building ones formula of servicing activities later on.

To me, what was needed,

  • A framework of a learning process and early research,
  • An activity that could build some sort of prototype or maybe “proof of concept”
  • And an activity that could produce a service through a work of process.

I would admit it will take a long journey understanding where we are now and what have Pita Kuning done in the past.

We have done quite a lot. At that time what we have done was a concept by the name of Kliniko-Psycho-Social.  A series of servicing activities that supports activities of clinical, medical, psychological and social.

What was lacking here ? Are there any obstacles in operating it? To understand completely meant to review to the core as if we were to opening a new page. Us, the new people were getting an opportunity to learn from the start.

But what about all that has happened and with the servicing activities before ? The fact is, there are no data. No written knowledge as those experience was with those who had the experience. When that person no longer with the organisation, all the effort and all the information vaporised with them. And therefore it takes a lot of effort for the new guys to learn let alone to continue the journey.

Understanding the fundamental of these services are based on those trust given based on the facts what has sustain in the lives of this organisation with its stakeholders.

So where do we start ?

There are a few important aspects in the process of building a service. I divide them into 2 parts of the framework :

First, a base formulation of a framework that we can later on needed to fill according to the learnings and needs we gathered in the field.

And,

Secondly, people who are experts in their fields. A Task Force for Pita Kuning services program.

The Formulation Service Pita Kuning

To me, the understanding for formulation becomes crucial for an organisation driven by a social or  humanitarian by volunteers because of the health aspect, meaning what we support is childhood cancer. Therefore the key is knowledge management. The objective are,

  • Structured and systematic,
  • Follow a purpose as based,
  • Form in composition and aspects,
  • Able to see the progress and each of the changes.
  • Taken from what we learn in the field based on patient habits and their families that also manifest by the learnings as we gathered in the field.
  • Based on varied of situation and condition we have at Pita Kuning.
  • Regularly monitored and measured each time we progressed.

I would give a parable from point A as the base structure. Describe as a framework, ideas and early assumptions. And point Z is the ideal form. That would give a solution life cycle that supports each other.

As an example, point A can totally be changed into point C but the goal as to be a sustainable media to support Indonesian children with cancer from underprivileged families can never be changed.

The end goal is sustainability of course. Pita Kuning wants to be able to take part on childhood cancer countermeasures in Indonesia, especially for those who really needs help.

How to do all the list above ? The answer was, knowledge management.

As we progress and learn, I become aware that many findings became something that we need to change on our service. I only hoped, who ever is the future leader could follow the discipline in recording methods that we have started here.

Knowledge management is essentially important for an organisation especially when the fast changes happens as the same spirit as the people who wants to support us.

The new Pita Kuning Philosophy

  • The Ribbon symbolises our commitment in advocating our thrusts, and in achieving sustainability in our operations.
  • The color Yellow represents the positive energy and passion as we demonstrate who we are, what we do, and why we do it as an organisation.
  • The name Pita Kuning embodies our pledge to spread awareness on and aid children with cancer, as we wholeheartedly perform our duties to provide sustainable programs with our partners that share the same goal, which is to improve the quality life of children with cancer and their families.

Lets continue.

In August , the formulation structure was like this :

In my head, my structure of thinking, I divided into a few stages :

  • First stage, a form of assisting method with education as supporting base activities.
  • Second stage, a form of assisting method for child with cancer who needs help (underprivileged background)
  • Third stage, an activity of giving funding.

All three stages are activities are an entity on its own. However each of them would benefits the formulation lifecycle we are aiming to build.

When developing a product services, in our case for social cause, we need to figure out how or what should become the basic form from an assisting model activities. For me, at that time, I would think it would be best to be

  • modular, because of their modular construction these are easily replaced, enabling quick refurbishment and turn round.
  • has an educational base activities each modules. Wether be it to educate the medical aspect or any other knowledge supporting the assisting activities for the child and family that supports the child needs.

However, what we found later on was the educational aspects seeks more than that. From the assisting formulation sides, we divided into 2 parts. A division to manage the volunteer and a division to manage the support knowledge needed for this assisting activities. How and what do we need for this ?

  • And on the distribution of support fund, the formula needs to have a measurable and clear aspects on its own.

As we learn from managing the process, in order to achieve that life cycle aspect that we want.

So since  2017, the development of our servicing product becomes this, a palliative care services focuses on providing pyscho-social benefits.

Ho we proceed,

What happens between August 2016 to the end of 2016 ?

After we have agreed on the formulation structure, we then have to figure out how to fill in with exercising some trial activities. We had 2 months to prepared everything up to a point where we need to choose 5 candidates for us to help.

Why within 2 months, we aim to share what we have learn to external parties by a certain date. Based on the plan, there were some steps to conquer in objective to build a new machine prototype, the 1st draft formulation of our product services.

By October 2016, we started to learn from our assisting activities and distribution support of funds for 3 months til December. Our hope, from all the learnings and findings gave us a much more clearer picture of what does it takes or how to describe “tepat manfaat” or the fight support/benefits, specialising in childhood cancer for underprivileged family.

We then also open ourselves to meet with other foundations and institutions or communities that has some relation with childhood cancer. We tried our best to approach and open ourselves to inputs and also incidents happened in the past, before our time of course. After all, we are all new to this. It doesn’t matter for us because we basically we all have a commonality, a huge desire to learn.

By the end of 2016, the next step after exercising the trial prototype, we presented our ide, this new concept, to the ourside world. Through media media luncheon show casing and sharing our stories. On the same day, we also gathered donors that have work with us also to share what we have done and also to introduce the new team.

In the end, this is an experiment of how media and donors see us with this new concept and how the potentials in the future in humanitarian social driven cause. We also knew it is important to share progress as we are fully aware of the responsibility to the public and those who have supported us.

Who is us ?

As I begin to carry on change management, I have met with a lot of people that has the same pathways with us, with our mission, people who have the same mission with us. We eventually met with people that Pita Kuning needs right now, that fits in with us, people who wants to help also people who wants to join.

Before i share more about these people, how it went from the beginning, I want to share 2 videos of Jack Ma that I felt have the same thinking as I do.

Similar in two ways.

First, search for people who is smarter than you.

A similar understanding with Jack Ma was about the misconception about being a leader that does not mean you have to know everything. I do not have any background in health nor do i have any experience in childhood cancer. I am not an expert in building business and I am aware of that. But I was trusted with this mission based on my experience, my ability, my skill set, to build a fundamental ground works that this organisation needs.

Why ? Because,

In search for the best in the field might be easy. It was necessary meeting the needs of change management at Pita Kuning. If we get it right, it would be an advantage for Pita Kuning. But to search for right people considering our resource and conditions we have,  was a challenge on its own. Usually, those who has the both the capacity and the leaderships skills has its own challenge.  And that leads to the point no 2.

Hal kedua, search the right people.

Pita Kuning is not for everyone. The key to finding the right candidate has to fit in with the needs with want for Pita Kuning .

  1. They have to have a capacity in the field, meaning experience, skills, knowledge to build Pita Kuning, and also accustomed to a work in a structured form and manner.
  2. Have a spirit of start-up, a sense of entrepreneurship. This means we a cannot afford for people who only care for doing their part but also help and support other parts when needed. Everybody needs to be able to do everything at the same time.
  3. Compassionate is a must. Having the heart who wants to help others. Pita Kuning is sosial philanthropy. What is means is the work is mainly to help other people. This person MUST have a liking to help other people. That person has to have that sense of understanding, what is reality and a great acceptance of certain condition that are very different.

These three aspect are not only for volunteers but also hired worker and anyone who wants to join us. We are on a mission to search the right candidate for the job.

“Pita Kuning embodies our pledge to spread awareness on and aid children with cancer, as we wholeheartedly perform our duties to provide sustainable programs with our partners that share the same goal”

Nevertheless, those who has leaderships quality in them are not only bright but has their own idealism. Has the experience, and not afraid to speak out. Critical and with their own character.

Those who has their own determination, expectations and style of work. Of course there will be some sort of “ego” friction, one common thing that would happened. But one thing that made be so proud was the fact that each and everyone one for those whom I have asked to join, I shared Pita Kuning story, then eventually joined and witness the activities would have a rather difficulty in letting go Pita Kuning.  Those who understood what Pita Kuning represent would loved and wanting more to contribute.

I would make an example like playing ball. Just like any other organisation we keep the ball going, together, from one part to another, and so it goes on. Here, at Pita Kuning, everytime I would see that ball being passed, the person who is handling the ball would want to take good care of it. That is how I’d admired Pita Kuning team, again, without any exception. I am at my most admiration and a privilege to be a part of them. Incredible people.

They could of course choose their paths another way, but they chose to stay or help in any way they can. Whatever it takes.

And how about millennials ? Most of the team members of this organisation are a millennial so what do i have to say based on my experience with them, and you may quote me on this,

“give them a great cause and the opportunity to have a huge responsibility. give them the power”

In particular to those who has supported building the new formulation of Pita Kuning, some has great contribution they have given. Who are they ? Go to click The Task Force.

Tyas Social Project – The Approach

English Version

#TyasSocialProject #2

How I was approach to be the next candidate of Pita Kuning Chairman.

Let us start my journey at Pita Kuning.

Before Pita Kuning I was working for a social institution that channels CSR program for corporations. This social institution with four pillars missions, education, women empowerment, entrepreneurship and compassionate reliefs. So I was moving from a corporate settings named Putera Sampoerna Foundation to a non profit philanthropy foundation, Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia, in short Pita Kuning.

The question that keeps coming to me was, why ? What was the reason I wanted to take this role as Chairman at Pita Kuning ?

It was a question that was often asked and given to me among friends or colleagues every time and every chance I meet with any of them. And so, every chance that I got I always shared the same answer.

“Because I can and I want”.

Meaning, I can do the job. To be honest, I know that there are so many that could do the job better than me, I’m sure. But at that moment, somehow, someway, God, the universe is giving me this job. And Pita Kuning has been searching for a new candidate for the next Chairman for more than 3 years and yet no one seems to either want it or have the right fit in terms of experience and vision.

And secondly, I want to help, and I understood myself that I have the capacity to do the work. At this point, how I see it, there are people that might have way much experience in business management or the best in the field. But the priority is not here. On the other hand there might be candidates who wants the role but does not have the background needed by this foundation during this period in time and with the much objectives needed to established.

So when that question was answered, the next was, what does it takes for me to be the next Chairman for Pita Kuning ? How was I be the next candidate for Pita Kuning next chair-person.

This is how the story goes. It started with an approach.

I was contacted by Pandji Pragiwaksono, Founder and Counsellor of Pita Kuning. He is also one of the member of c3, Community for Children with Cancer. c3 is the creator of Pita Kuning Foundation. Straight forward he asked, do you want to be one of Pita Kuning’s candidate for Chair ?

It took a minute of pause and then I asked, what do i have to do ?

Pandji then explained,

First, “just make a concept that you envision of how you currently see Pita Kuning and make a short plan of what you plan to make the changes needed for Pita Kuning.”

And then he added, “Don’t get me wrong ya mba, we are searching for the right candidate. We’ve been search for the last two years and we can no longer wait anymore now. Since you are with PSF, I figure you have some experience in social activities and then, …. “ he paused, “I know you, I know how you work, so now I’m calling to ask you if you would consider the opportunity.”

To be frank, I am actually not new to this organisation. I have seen them from the start and continue to watched them grow from a community based, as I remember back in the days when c3 (community with children) was doing fundraising activities at Mall Kelapa Gading with RAN and other artists. Together with ACER Indonesia as main sponsor. I’ve also join in on some occasions at the hospital, Rumah Sakit Kanker Dharmais and some fundraising events at a local restaurant near Kemang area. But it was a very long time ago.

I also knew most of the people. And they know me. There was also a time when I was still with multiply.com, an e-commerce platform had partner with Pita Kuning as their donation channel. Having strategic partnership role at multiply.com i had the opportunity to educate industries that was new to digital platforms and e-commerce.

To me, I always thought, I will someday take my part and have my turn to contribute towards this foundation but I didn’t know how at that time.

Personally, I myself has always loved being an advocate for those who are voiceless. I am very passionate in voicing out what I think was wrong. In any situation to be honest. You can count on me to rally up a protest or some sort. And somehow I have a huge heart for those who need help. I love to listen to people. And at home, I am the caretaker of the family.

It might be, as I am the only female in my family, therefore when my father got sick, I was the one who make sure everything was right for his need at the time. To coordinate with family members, assist his needs. And somehow my parents also was more comfortable being taken care and assisted by me.

Essentially, the main goal that Pita Kuning leaders wanted was a change. Basically, they wanted to the new chairman to make that change. As what they understood at that moment, Pita Kuning Foundation was not going anywhere. Did not move. Don’t know where to go. Their main goal was to have the opportunity to help more children with cancer around Indonesia. And beyond that, they wanted to also have that chance to grow and evolve to a position that fits with the needs and the betterment of Indonesian child with cancer, especially from underprivileged background.

For those who wants to know you are the owner of this foundation. In Indonesian, by law the owner are the Counsel (Pembina Yayasan) that are also the founders of this Foundation. They are Pandji Pragiwaksono and Steny Agustaf.

Pita Kuning was established by a group of young volunteers join together to help children with cancer from underprivileged  families.  Lanang Aribowo was the Community Leader for c3 ( Community for Children with Cancer) that later on was appointed as Chairman for the Foundation as they established in April 2007. They were the ones making sure of the role of Pita Kuning in partaking support for children with cancer from underprivileged  families.

What also matter was for this foundation to grow and evolve in the social initiative society in Indonesia and be a part for the global cause.

Aside from all the above, they wanted to have growth within the organisation. Growth to those who are in the organisation. Growth for the people who participate, give their support, their value, time and work for the organisation, in need progress and evolve to the knowledge and capabilities needed within the community of Pita Kuning. Grow together.

For this particular need the leaders of Pita Kuning keep trying to seek the right candidate who can do it. Someone to do the job. So for a while, they have been searching for someone who could do the job. Or in this condition, could start doing it.

They, the leaders of Pita Kuning have full faith that this Foundation has a huge potential to support many more child in need. Why, it is based on what they have done so far and the reputation experienced work thus far. Beyond that it was a feeling of responsibility from those who have trust and gives support within the years towards Pita Kuning that they can never ever forget.

As time goes by, the founders which are also professionals in their own way also have priorities and tremendous duties that were also growing. They needed someone that can manage all of the needs. Finding someone particular is never easy.

Someone who has the background, experience, a suitable vision and history of an organisation that at that time was almost 10 years old and can work together with them. It is true, that working in the social industry is not for everyone. Need a lot of compassion and liking to help other people in need. Someone who has the heart for tasks like these.

Within a couple of week after the phone call I submitted my plan. A few pages of general ideas that I plan I think I can do.

I didn’t remember after that hearing from them until a couple of months. At that moment I was in the middle of a change management process in the company I am with. So it was quite hectic and super busy. They called in and informed me, “I think you’re it mba, we couldn’t find anyone else that gave the vision for this foundation quite well as you did”. That was September 2015.

What was most importantly that might people have already known was I am the older sister of Pandji Pragiwaksono. In this case, I work for him.

This foundation is not mine. But I was to be hired by the Foundation, by Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia. And this was also my first question I had asked when was reached by phone, at that time, a few months back.

For those who have known me, might know I have worked for Pandji in the early days building Pandji Pragiwaksono from someone who work for entertainment industry to someone building and crafting his brand. I am someone who help and support in building his personal brand Pandji Pragiwaksono. At that time, evenly, not many realised that I had a family relationship with hi,. Not until someone knows, and then asked, and then I replied. It is probably because we are not that similar in a glimpse and I do not feel it is necessary for me to share.  My experience working for management Pandji Pragiwaksono will also be quite the story that later one day I will share. One story at a time ya ^_^

Continue to, why me ?

Why it is important for me to share my story, Tyas Social Project

First and foremost, working for a foundation with sole purpose is to help those in need is a noble cause. In honour of the trust given to me, I feel it is necessary to share this journey throughout my time serving at Pita Kuning.

As a professional I would also do not want what we have build together be forgotten or misunderstood.

And most importantly, what we build was unique and new. I believe in sharing knowledge and so through series of management journal could help be a reference.

#TyasSocialProject is essentially a strategic management documentation of my journey as Chairman for Pita Kuning Foundation named, Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia. A narration I hope could give a new perspective for those who reads it.

Affordable Shopping in Tokyo

Affordable Shopping in Tokyo

Shopping sebenarnya bukan menjadi prioritas trip kami kali ini. Tapi mana mungkin ga belanja atau beli barang lagi liburan bukan ? 😀

  1. Uniqlo Ginza

Uniqlo Store 12 lantai ! I have got to see this !

  • This is a tax free shopping store. So convenient it is that honestly, I would recommend beli oleh-oleh lebih baik disini aja. Harga 35ribu, 65ribu, 150ribu rupiah. Lumayan.
  • Google search : Uniqlo Ginza. UNIQLO Ginza store, 6 Chome-9-5 Ginza, 中央区 Tokyo 104-0061

This is Japan. You have to experience this.

  1. DECKS Tokyo Beach at Odaiba

Menurut kami, ini suatu area yang lebih banyak ingin kami explore more and more !

Terbagi 2 bagian, saya menyebutnya bagian pasar dan satu lagi kalo menurut suami saya katanya section yang lebih mirip lower east side of New York. I wouldn’t know. I’ve never been. :p #kodekeras

Salah satu toko unik untuk kacamata https://www.factory900.jp/ so cool. It is a must go to shop when in Harajuku.

  1. Asakusa

Menurut saya, ga tau bener atau salah ya. Tapi my take on Asakusa adalah suatu tempat berkumpulnya segala macam bentuk, tempat dan khas budaya Jepang tumplek menjadi satu.

Just walking distant, masih di area temple kita masuki Nakamise Shopping Street.

More information about Asakusa dapat disimak disini. Enjoy !

  1. Tokyu Hands and Don Quijote

Tokyo Hands dan Don Quijote. Kedua tempat ini adalah must go to banget. They are the biggest most cheapest and complete retail chain store di Jepang. Before you go home at least you have to come and shop here. Cabangnya cukup banyak disekitar Tokyo.

Electronic. Make up. Baju, sepatu. Souvenir. Minimal 7 lantai tiap toko. Harga sangat miring. Sangat-sangat miring.

Plus ! Banyak sekali promo buy one get one atau paketan yang membuat berjam-jam belanja disini. Trust me. You have to go here. Beli make up hits Jepang “KATE” juga tersedia disini.

Plus ! Tax free. What more could you asked for.

Need I say more ? Jadi deh kembali barang-barang make up saya. Not much memang tapi ngesellin sik klo hilang begitu saja. Thank you Anna I owe you much ! Dan thank you AMSHU the store keeper, no matter what or how, it was nice of him to take the effort in finding me. Aya aya waeeeeeee lahh pokoknya. 😀

Oh ya, just so you know, Pharrell favorite go to store is Tokyu Hands. So go figure 😀

DECKS Tokyo Beach at Odaiba

DECKS Tokyo Beach at Odaiba

So it was nice relief actually. So helpful.

Yang bahan katun tapi tidak terlalu dressy but still have that Japanese Design yang khas dan unik.

This store is my go-to shopping for kimono !

Banyak pop up attraction seperti …

Dan evan as adventurous as he is, tiba-tiba minta maen ini !

Waaaaah senangnya dia 😀

Berikut video cuplikan evan maen bubble ball ^_^
