We can survive staying at home

July 2, 2020October 1, 20201 Comment

What we learn from social distancing is that we are perfectly capable to survive staying at home.

It is only during the unprecedented times that we can know how far human can survived hardship and being able to face life challenges.

Going through the uncertainties, coping with our fears and anxiety, how to be able to push ourselves to try and learn new things, how are we able to continue living with good spirit and have a healthy attitude.

It is all behavioural shifts.

These are some things happening in my live and my surroundings.

Just to take note, I have been working from home on and off for the last 5 years. My husband and I are freelancers and consultants but also passionate writers so we are used to having our lives structured in a way that working from home is able to do.

As for our child, from early on, I tried to structure a practice of day to day habit. So when the pandemic hit social distancing time, we were also able to maintain a good daily routine from home.

For instance, no matter what day it is, school days or weekends, we would all get up of bed around 6 to 6.30. Evan our child goes to bath, have breakfast and then ready to start the day. I and my husband would do our morning routine, like talking walks or do some exercise.

So by 8 am he will say, “What do I have to do now, mama ?”

A frame to life. Is what the most important aspect we must have, I think. The structure keeps us going. Discipline comes from the daily routine we do. So if one of them didn’t happen we would feel something is missing and make our self to do as we need it to.

Like sunbathing in the morning or exercising every day.

For our son specifically, we have added some additional routines that could help him mentally occupied and yet be energised. We could change the time when do it but still becomes something we have to do within the day. It’s hard not to have anything to do and keep your mind busy. It’s not lazy. It’s simply empty. That void is dangerous.

A day in a life of Evan consist of,

  • Waking up at 6.
  • 5 minutes’ exercise.
  • Bath
  • Breakfast.
  • Chill with an iPad or TV or playing games.
  • After Mama is ready, start to do his practice. A two combination between piano, Indonesian literature or multiplication.
  • The rest of the day would be free to play or school time.

We have projects to occupy his thoughts or get him in the mood as a monthly goal. Like making a comic book or craft a handmade game.

We don’t encourage day time sleeping mainly for the reason to have a good sleep when the night comes.

We would make something exciting for lunch just to excite up the mood.

And we would also do something together on the weekends like morning walks or watching a movie.

But Evan is a good boy. He is good on his own. He can manage to entertain himself, by himself. That’s a relief. And also a blessing.

Back to surviving on our own is that we learn to take care of ourselves on our own.

  • Starting from learning how to cooks meals that we usually have from restaurants.

Cooking has become an enjoyable activity to do. Some for coping mechanism. But to me is mostly to excite the whole family as something to look for as we continue staying at home. Making things that seems easy and continue to do for others become a hobby or start a homemade business.

  • Exercising without going to the gym. I found some applications that helps us and really guide us on yoga and exercise according to what suitable for our needs.

  • Produce our own vegetables or produce our own needs.

  • Back to natural remedy. We would also send and re-stock these to our closest family near to our house.

Digital transformation in the pandemic era

July 2, 2020November 18, 20201 Comment

Hi. How are you? How are you so far in this pandemic ?

I feel it is necessary to ask how everybody is doing, because this situation is hard. Everything is changing and changes are hard. It is hard because it is taken some getting use to.

One change we need to work on is digitalisation in our daily lives. We used to avoid to do things using digital tools or platforms but now, we no longer can. Whether you like it or not. All aspects of life today are required access through digital ways.

No cash, just online payment. Even to our friendly neighbourhood vegetable vendor, we call tukang sayur. Credit card payment now can no longer pay by signature but to use verification personal identification number.

In addition to that, staying at home involves disruptive way of working, continuing the school experience and here in Indonesia praying at home is tremendously significant as we enter the month Ramadhan and the holy day of Eid Mubarak as we usually come together with family and friends. We help our parents be more able in using digital platforms more than they were used to. To be fair the struggle is on both sides, us teaching them how to and them learning to do it and able to independently do it.

Lebaran Social Distancing

In the working sector, let’s look at how big tech companies works due to corona virus like google, facebook and twitter they plan to continue remote work at least 5 to 10 years onwards.

Somehow, I remember a discussion I had with my previous HR personal while working for an organisation 5 years ago. I predicted that how we work in the future would change. I imagine one person could have 2-3 jobs at once due to the value of expertise and conveniences.  It looks like my predictions could come true after all.

At that time, the HR manager said there’s no way, not in the organisation I work for, at that time, would ever comply with such ways. But in my head I said, there will be a time when no company can afford not to follow as the world it moving to that directions. It is possible. Working from home allow the possibility.

High technology is being commonly used and becoming self sufficient in our daily lives. The above video from The Economist actually confirmed my understanding of what I’ve observe before.

So what is this global pandemic actually advancing and preparing us for the future ?

Learn to re-evaluate the meaning of a value

July 2, 2020October 1, 20201 Comment

Value of things. Value of goods. The value of life.

The biggest impact from global pandemic is social economic changes. As a consequence of an emergency, we begin to shift our focus on what is more important. The sense of crisis makes our benchmark to wisely choose our priority.

In this new situation pushes us to rethink various aspects of our daily life. Wether it will encourage individual needs, shared aspirations or community expectations.

The discipline of maintaining social distancing leads us to appreciate the value of time and other important values like being together and family that is currently not able to have. We become aware of the importance of living a good life invites us together to adjust the ecosystem of life.

Everything is reconsidered. Important or not. Necessary or not. Good or not. Give benefits to how many people or will harm more people as we go on with our lives. We don’t think for long term, but learn to be more considerate on what to buy for the now.

The value of an item or a service. And the value of living together means it cannot be exclusive.

Reactions of social distancing certainly becomes vary.

When everything becomes limited. When leaving the house becomes an opportunity to go out but also feels like going into a battlefield. The importance and what is valuable are taken into consideration each time.

Daily lives matter such as instances of appreciating food that is not wasted and seeing the advantages of buying local food ingredients is now a guide that we can admit we are doing lately.

When we buy locally. There are so many advantages towards social well-being from mutual dependence to interactions. Hygiene and freshness guaranteed, reduced waste packaging and energy if we compared the result of buying from miles and miles away, and lastly we help accelerate the economic rotation within our region. These are all benefits towards buying local.

Are we returning to the era of first world problem like life necessity ? Or when our luxury feel good items are outrageously insensitive to wish for. Because the next question will be, why do we need it ? We are all focusing on our our safety, health, earn a living and stay educated. Everything else seems secondary nowadays.

We become that person, choosing between 2 significant very different perception of values. Like buying the best and buying better. We are learning how our life feels is much more important than how our life looks.

It can even possibly become tragically irrelevant or insignificant.

We are not the same

July 2, 2020October 1, 20201 Comment

What we learn from social distancing.

We are not in the same boat in this pandemic.

From the early days entering global pandemic and before social distancing being govern I often see conversations on social media.

How opinions would be divided to those who insist staying at home to be safe versus those who would openly share their huge loss and impact in their businesses, having the fear of losing their jobs, or struggling to continue working.

The fact that often forgotten, most of Indonesian people really depend on daily income. So social distancing could be very hard for them. On the other hand, we all will take time and process to cope and learn how to change or learn new ways of working. And it is not easy.

However, they try their best to stay positive and act as if they are ok. Keep in mind they might not be ok. They are just trying their best.

To judge a person in their darkest days or on their trying time is so unfair.

We are not in the same situations, our conditions might be very different from each other as well as our circumstances. We are all in different boats.

But if we are in this together we have to think bigger. Rather than scolding them to stay a float, help to put them on bigger ships. That way make all boats are safe while in this journey together at sea.

So before judging. Before talking. Before action. Think again. Think harder. Try to understand.

If you say you are in this together then help. Don’t just make it harder than its already is.

People need hope and solution. If you cannot give any of that, the least that you can do is to be kind.
